Community Engagement

Community Unites for Charity Golf Event Benefiting The Tommy Kid Foundation

In a heartwarming display of community support, participants gathered for The Tommy Kid Foundation's annual charity golf event on August 26th. The event raises awareness and funds for those affected by Crohn's Disease and Hepatosplenic T-cell Lymphoma.

This year, the event directly supported the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation. In the past four years, The Tommy Kid Foundation has raised over one hundred thousand dollars to assist those fighting similar conditions to those Tommy faced.

Since 2021, the charity has raised over $100,000 total for both the Be the Match Foundation, the T-Cell Leukemia Lymphoma Foundation, and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation.

The foundation’s mission is rooted in the story of Tommy Oliver, a bright young man who attended Rutgers University, studying Computer Science. Despite facing numerous health challenges, Tommy remained compassionate and light-hearted, always bringing a smile to those around him. He cherished his time with family and friends, especially his close bond with his mother, father and brother Jack.

Jack Oliver Jr., Tommy’s brother, reflected on Tommy’s lasting impact, sharing, "Don't fear your grief. Embrace it. Make something better from it." These words, spoken by Tommy shortly before his passing, have guided Jack ever since. Jack expressed the profound difficulty of losing a sibling but found solace and purpose in helping to establish The Tommy Kid Foundation.

Jack, now a Nutley resident, hopes to share his story with those he comes across. Jack currently produces content for the social media platform Jomboy Media, and uses his presence to honor his brother's legacy.

Local friend and Real Estate Agent Zachary Sebek was touched by his story, which prompted him to play in the annual golf outing this year. As Sebek said, “This event was beautiful, and it's incredible to see the impact it has! This outing was truly wonderful to be a part of.” Sebek and many other Nutley residents played in the Golf Event this year which was hosted at Shackamaxon Country Club in Scotch Plains.

Jack’s hope is that, through the foundation, they can save at least one life, making all their efforts worthwhile. He believes Tommy's presence remains alive through the foundation and the support it garners.

This golf event was not just about raising money; it was a tribute to Tommy's life and the legacy he left behind—a reminder of the importance of continuing to support those battling similar challenges.
